Background
Missing Maps is an initiative led by a collective of organizations working towards a common goal of creating accessible map data where humanitarian organizations are operating. It was started in 2014 by Médecins Sans Frontieres, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, British Red Cross and American Red Cross.
Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Czechia is seeking a web designer–developer to help rebuild and redesign the Missing Maps website. The project is focused on rebuilding and modernizing the Missing Maps website. The new website should retain the existing content but offer a stable, user-friendly, and low-maintenance platform. We are looking for someone to build and design the website, but also someone who can help to choose the best technical solution going forward.
The current site is publicly available on GitHub and is built using Jekyll.
Scope of Work
The selected offeror will be responsible for:
- Researching and recommending the best technical solution
- Rebuilding and designing (modernizing) the Missing Maps website
- Ensuring the website functions properly and addressing any bugs for a period of 6 months after launch
All code and graphics will be published under agreed open-source license.
MSF Czechia Project Lead will be responsible for facilitating timely access as required to GitHub repositories, servers and other infrastructure needed.
Expected activities & deliverables
The selected offeror will:
- Consult with the MSF Czechia Project Lead possibilities of SSG Options and themes, particularly focusing on:
- Ease of maintenance
- Ease of adding content, especially blog posts
- Compatibility with GitHub-based workflows
- Prepare two website concepts:
- One using the Dogwood theme in Jekyll, updated with a modern, clean design.
- One using a SSG theme or framework based on research into best technical solution and the outcome of conversation with the MSF Czechia Project Lead (compatible with GitHub Pages or easily hosted elsewhere)
Note: We are open to flexibility here. For example, if the design exploration within the Dogwood framework clearly meets our needs (or clearly does not), we may decide to focus on a single direction sooner in the process.
- Prepare a new visual style for the Missing Maps website, including mockups, design elements, and other graphic assets
- Consult with the MSF Czechia Project Lead about new style and branding
- Provide mockups or prototypes for review by the Missing Maps consortium
- Present the proposed technical solution and new visual style to Missing Maps consortium for feedback and final approval
- Develop the selected version of the website.
- Ensure the website is responsive across different browsers and mobile devices
- Ensure the website is accessible and properly documented for ease of use and future updates
- Deliver clear and complete documentation for maintenance and content updates
- Conduct a final presentation of the completed website to Missing Maps consortium
- Provide bug fixing and technical support for a period of 6 months after launch
Site Structure Requirements
Required Pages & Sections (based on the content on the current website, further developing this website draft):
- Main Page (About) – with information on members, ethics, global Missing Maps stats OhSome, HieGIT visualization, MapSwipe Stats
- Get involved
- Learn to map – beginner, advanced, validation, and field mapping resources
- Run an event – with checklist and materials
- Links/Tools – to Tasking Manager, MapSwipe, Sketch Map Tool, …
- Blog – ability to publish posts easily, without advanced coding. We also want to migrate all the historic blog post to the new website
- Event calendar – integrating a filtered view of relevant Missing Maps events from OSMCal
